Natural Hair Products – Where I Save and Where I Splurge

Hey BeauTIFFul! I prefer to splurge on things like natural hair products, extravagant nights out with my girls, shopping sprees, and brunch. No, I'm joking, I live in NYC and that is a luxury and huge expense within itself.. So, here is a list of products that are a little pricey that I don't mind splurging on and some of the natural hair products that I love that are a little more cost effective. Warning - I am a certified product junkie. No really, I have 99 problems and my closet full of hair products is one!

Cleansers: Splurge

Hair Rules Daily Cleansing Cream
I prefer to splurge when it comes to shampoos and cleansers. My all time favorite cleanser is the Hair Rules Daily Cleansing Cream.* It leaves my hair SUPER soft and moisturized and works wonders on my natural hair. The great thing about it is that it is gentle enough to use daily, so for those hot summer months when I like to wear wash and go's I wash my hair every 2-3 days with this stuff, and in the winter months I use it weekly. 8oz is around $16, but I buy the larger one for $32.

Cleansers: Save

When I have to save on a hair cleanser, I immediately reach for my Shea Moisture Organic Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo.* Shea moisture shampoos have been on my holy grail list since 2011 because they are amazing! This shampoo doesn't leave your hair feeling dry at all, and smells amazing. A little bit of this goes a very long way, so I typically go through a bottle in 3-4 months or so. At around $11.99 for a 13oz bottle, that's a steal!

Deep Conditioners: Splurge

You can save a ton of money by making your own deep conditioner. Just take some avocado, honey, oils, and a few more easily accessible ingredients. But I prefer to splurge when it comes deep conditioners and save when it comes to rinse out conditioners. Deep conditioners are an important part of any natural hair regimen, and can honestly make or brake your natural hair journey. I love to invest in a great, moisturizing, thick deep conditioner with natural ingredients and plenty of slip. Some of my favorite deep conditioners are:

When I have to save on a conditioner, the possibilities are endless! I use a bunch of affordable conditioners to detangle, moisturize, and condition my hair. My top choices are:

Styling Products and Moisturizers

Gels, curling creams, moisturizers, edge controls, and pomades all have their place in my regimen.

Splurge

Camille Rose Naturals makes some of the best stylers and moisturizers that I have tried on my hair. I love the Camille Rose Naturals Aloe Whipped Butter Gel,* Almond Jai Twisting Butter,* and Curlaide Moisture Butter* (ATF) for twist outs, braid outs, and bantu knot out styles. The Curl Maker* is excellent for wash and gos and the Curl Love Moisture Milk* is their leave-in that pairs well with all of their products. They are a bit pricey, but SO worth it!

Eden Body Works has some amazing styling products as well. Their Coconut Shea line is terrific! After using these products I noticed that my hair is noticeable defined, soft, shiny, and moisturized for days. Here are my favorite styling products from that line: Coconut Shea Curl Defining Crème,* Control Edge Gel* (an amazing pomade), All Natural Pudding Souffle.* The All Natural Leave In Conditioner* pairs well with all of these products and is a great moisturizer alone.

Splurge

Alikay Naturals has excellent moisturizers, leave-ins and styling products as well. They all smell GREAT and have really great ingredients in them. I am addicted to the Lemongrass Leave-In* (so much so that I currently have 3 full bottles in my house). The Moisture Rich Hair Parfait* paired with the Crème Brulee Curling Custard* gave me one of my BEST and most defined twist outs ever. The Shea-Yogurt Hair Moisturizer* is an excellent sealant and seals moisture into my hair like a pro.

Cantu Shea Butter makes some amazing and affordable stylers and moisturizers. My favorites are the Creamy Hair Lotion* (great for second and third day hair) and the Coconut Curling Cream.* Cantu products are easily accessible and can be found in drugstores, Target, Walmart, local beauty supply stores, and online.

Splurge

Original Moxie is an amazing brand that feature products that are chock full of natural ingredients. I fell in love with the Get Clean! No Foam Shampoo (which was the very first gentle sulphate free shampoo that didn't foam), Intense Quench Deep Conditioner (I still use this to this day), and the super moisturizing Everyday Leave-in Detangling Conditioner.

Coconut oil is one of the best oils for hair since it can be used in many different ways. It can be used to treat hair loss and dandruff, mend split ends, condition hair, helps retain moisture, and helps to reduce protein loss in hair. When using coconut oil for your hair and body, it is best to buy organic or extra virgin coconut oil.

Splurge

Soultanicals is a small black owned brand that is based in Brooklyn, NY. I purchased some Soultanicals products at the NY World Natural Hair Show last summer. Their products are all natural and smell heavenly. I fell in love with the Mango Dip Detangling Slip, Knot Butta, and Knot Sauce. The products are priced at around $15, so they can be a splurge, but Soultanicals has some great sales throughout the year, so you can get them for a steal!

Raw shea butter* is great for the skin, can be used as a body moisturizer or to help with stretch marks,  can be used as a sealant, can be used as a styler, moisturizes dry scalp, and brings shine and luster to hair. It is a top ingredient in many of the natural hair products on the market and can be easily mixed with oils and other ingredients to make your own DIY products. You can find raw shea butter for great prices around the web, with prices starting as low as $5.

Splurge

One of my all time favorite leave-in conditioners is the Karen's Body Beautiful Sweet Ambrosia Leave-In.* It has been in my product stash for over three years, and I buy multiple bottles of it at a time. The smell is heavenly, it leaves my hair moisturized for days, and it is easily accessible and sold in Target. It is a bit of a splurge, but it is so worth it!

I love a thick gel for my puffs, buns, and wash and gos. Eco Styler Gel* is an all time favorite of many naturals and Ampro Pro Styl Olive Oil Gel* is a favorite of mine.
