How to Slay a Wash and Go | Defining Type 4 Hair

Hey beauties! Mastering a wash and go is not an easy feat for us kinky haired girls, but luckily I am sharing technique for a defined, long lasting wash and go!

PRODUCTS

Shampoo and condition your hair using your products of choice. I like to deep condition my hair for at least 5 mins before a wash and go.
You of course want to apply a moisturizer before your styling product. I like to use thick custards, puddings, or maximum hold gels that whip my curls in to shape. Finding a product that tames your kinks is a matter of trial and error. My current favorites are the Ampro Olive Oil Gel, Uncle Funkys Daughter Curl Magic, & the Camille Rose Naturals Curl Maker.

CLEANSE, CONDITION, DETANGLE

My most successful wash and goes start off with a clean slate – a fresh shampoo and condition. While I love cowashing, cowashes tend to leave behind residue on our strands and can cause flaking or build up when applying gel and other styling products. Make sure you begin detangling your hair with a conditioner during this step.

TECHNIQUE – SHINGLING

I use the shingling method for my wash and go, which clumps my curls by concentrating on small sections of hair. Once your hair has been cleansed and conditioned, section it into four-six large sections. Make sure your hair is soaking wet for this part! Start with the first section and smooth a quarter sized amount of your leave-in conditioner through the section. Apply your gel or styling cream from your ends to your roots and use your brush to evenly distribute the product. Making sure to rake the gel through as you smooth out your curls, which will help define and elongate your curls. When complete, move on to the next section.
This part is totally optional, but makes a world of a difference for me. When you complete your entire head, resaturate your hair with water and shake. You can diffuse your hair or air dry.  If you choose to air dry, do not touch during the drying process.

MAINTENANCE

When my hair was longer I used to wear three pineapples, one for my front bang section and pigtails in the back. Now that my hair is shorter, I haven’t been able to find the perfect maintenance routine but I may go back to doing small pineapples again. Each morning I mist my hair with water and shake my head to revive the curls.
